A grenade exploded in a nightclub in the bustling centre of Kenyan capital Nairobi.

A grenade exploded in a nightclub in the bustling centre of Kenyan capital Nairobi. There was no official confirmation from police about the blast, but, according to the central Nairobi police chief Eric Mugambi, 14 people were wounded in the explosion.

“Initial investigations show it is a grenade that was thrown inside, fourteen people have been injured,” chief Mugambi said.

According to Reuters, the attack came a week after Kenya launched a cross-border operation against al Qaeda-linked al Shabaab militants in southern Somalia after a wave of kidnappings of foreigners on Kenyan soil.

Al Shabaab, that denies responsibility for the kidnappings, had threatened major reprisal attacks if Kenyan troops did not withdraw, prompting the U.S. embassy in Kenya to warn of an ‘imminent threat’ of a terrorist attack in the East African country.
